Ohhh, now I remember why I hate garage sales.
Monday, June 4th, 2007Yea, so we ventured out for the annual neighborhood garage sales of the town we live in. Let me just start by saying this, I should have known- no I did know that 99% of the crap we would see would be worthless, but we went anyways. Second, how did I know it would be worthless? Well for starters, we live in a town that has a racetrack, every Sunday morning the place is totally trashed which is proof that these people have little self respect and none for their beloved track. You can follow the trail of beer cans a mile in every direction. On friday when I went past the high school, there was a pickup with a full size american flag & a full size confederate flag mounted on the bed, some 80’s sport car painted in the general lee color beside it, and next to that was another vehicle with a full size confederate flag…. need i say more. Now I try not to be stereotypical or judgemental but come on, there are stereotypes for a reason aren’t there? I mean tell me it was just coincidence that in a town where all this takes place- the guy grilling the pork chops just happened to have a mullet. So maybe we were just stupid in the first place for thinking we might find a great deal at these garage sales. Basically it was four hours of walking in the sun glancing at junk no one wants, not even people with plastic frogs that have plastic flowers coming out of their backs sitting on their porches. It was a nightmare. I bought a $1.00 coffee grinder. That’s it. I would have rather spent $20 & stayed home. Being with the fam is always good, but I’m thinking we could have had more fun elsewhere. So there you have it, that’s why I hate (some) garage sales. Aside from that, we also got a view of the other side of the spectrum. The parade of homes. Ok, I also hate going to that. We payed money to tour $250,000 to $500,000 homes. Of course they have them decorated so well that if you had the money you would just say- I’ll take everything. These houses are for sale, no one lives in them and it looks like no one lives in them. Who really has a sculpture of a bird taking up their entire end table?? Where is all the stuff people actually use supposed to go?? I just didn’t enjoy it. It’s not my personality. I like homes that look lived in and inviting, these were more museum like. Yea they’re nice- just not me. Maybe if I could afford one I would feel differently? I doubt it. One thing is for sure that I wouldn’t build anything like that if I did have the money. One of the houses burnt to the ground the night before we went. That was something to see. There was literally just nothing left. I imagined all the brand new stuff just burning up. I think it was a good exaple of how it’s really just stuff. It doesn’t matter how well it was built or how much it cost, it all went up in flames the same. It was weird to look at. At least no one lived there. So that was basically our fun filled weekend, I did some drawing but nothing much. Maybe tonight, maybe not.
